About the KUHeS PhD Studentship in Surgical Disciplines at University of Bergen Norway 2022

The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES) together with Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) and Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) has received a grant from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), under the the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Building in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED II), and plans to use the funds to strengthen clinical, academic and research capacity in surgical specialties as well as related specialties of anaesthesia, radiology and pathology.

NORHED II will run from 2021 to 2026.

KUHES is therefore calling for applications from suitable candidates to be considered for 4 PhD studentships in surgical fields at University of Bergen (UoB) Norway. KUHES as a grant holder will facilitate with the selection process, identification of local supervisors as well as for other logistical support.

Site
This a PhD by research and publication offered by UoB. The candidate will be based in Malawi, where the research will be conducted, but will have prescribed courses and other academic activities done in Norway.

2 candidates will be based in Lilongwe at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) and 2 will be based in Blantyre at KUHES / QECH.

Commencement
PhD studentships at UoB start at any time. Those successful in the interview will be able to commence the application process with the university as soon after the local interviews as possible.

Duration
The PhD Studentships will typically be for 3-5 years depending on individual progress. It is envisaged that the student will complete the training within the lifespan of the grant – by 2026.

Eligibility
The applicant must

  • Be Malawian
  • Have an MBBS degree
  • Have a postgraduate surgical qualification such as an MMed or Fellowship. All surgical specialties will be considered. Medical graduates with other postgraduate qualifications such as Public Health and Epidemiology may be considered
  • Be in clinical practice and have current registration with the Medical council of Malawi
  • Be currently employed in the public sector such as with Ministry of Health or KUHES

Stipend
Those successful will be eligible for:

  • A training stipend
  • A research grant to conduct research locally
  • Travel, accommodation and other logistical expenses when going and spending time in Norway.
  • Other logistical support to registration and completion of the PhD studentship at UoB.

The specific amounts will be made known to the successful candidates. It is advisable for the candidate to have other forms of income such as a salary form an employer as the grant will not be able to pay a full local salary and other employment benefits

Applicants should submit:

  • An application letter
  • A full CV including full contact details of two referees, who will be asked to submit reference letters directly to KUHES
  • Academic transcripts
  • A brief Academic Statement of Purpose – defining and discussing goals; need and justification of intended research areas; and how you previous training, education and experience makes you the best fit.
  • Certified copies of all academic qualifications
  • Certified copies of registration including a ‘letter of good standing’ from relevant regulatory authorities such as the Medical Council of Malawi
  • Supporting letter from current employer
