Malawi Govt Nods to UNIMA Delinking

The Government of Malawi, through the Office of the Vice President announced that de-linking of the University of Malawi will proceed, overriding UNIMA Council's decision made earlier this year to halt the process. The announcement was made on Thursday 18th February 2021 following a meeting between the Vice President, UNIMA Council, The Attorney General and the Minister of Justice.
The de-linking will see formation of three universities as the College of Medicine will merge with Kamuzu College of Nursing to form the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KuHES); while The Polytechnic will form the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) and Chancellor College will become the University of Malawi (UNIMA).
The del-linking is expected to increasing access to higher education and improve governance and operational efficiency in public universities in Malawi.
