About the University of Oslo NORAD’s NORHED II PhD and MSc Scholarships

The Universities of: Oslo (UiO, Norway), Malawi (UNIMA), Dar es Salaam (UDSM, Tanzania) and Mzuzu (MZUNI, Malawi) are implementing a project titled “Climate Change and Ecosystems Management in Malawi and Tanzania”. This is a 6-year project that is being implemented with financial support from the Royal Kingdom of Norway under NORAD’s NORHED II Programme. Research activities under this project are focusing on the ecosystem within the Lake Malawi/Nyasa Basin.

The project has therefore budgeted funds to support PhD and MSc level studies at UiO, UNIMA, UDSM and MZUNI. Female applicants and those with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

PhD Studies at UiO

Two (2) fellowships are available for outstanding students from Malawi to be registered for PhD study in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UiO in the area of Water and Environment in 2022 and 2023. The students will be on a sandwich mode of study, spending half the time in Oslo and the other half in Malawi. The study period is three years in total. The scholarship covers visatuition, research, travel and basic living expenses while in Norway and Malawi. The applicants should have an MSc degree in areas such as hydrologyhydrogeology, environmental geochemistry, climate and environmental sciences, with skills in handling large data sets and models. Knowledge of developing models will be an added advantage.

PhD and MSc studies at UDSM

One (1) full PhD and 4 MSc fellowships are available for outstanding students from Tanzania to be registered for study at UDSM in the area of Water and Environment. The fellowship covers tuition, basic living and research expenses. The applicants for PhD should have an MSc degree and applicants for MSc should have BSc degree in areas such as hydrology, hydrogeology, climate and environmental sciences, with skills in handling large data sets and models. Knowledge of developing models will be an added advantage.

PhD and MSc studies at MZUNI

Two full PhD and 4 full MSc fellowships are available for outstanding students from Malawi to be registered for study at MZUNI in the area of Water and Environment. The fellowship covers tuition, basic living and research expenses. The applicants for PhD should have an MSc degree and applicants for MSc should have BSc in areas such as hydrology, hydrogeology, climate and environmental sciences, with skills in handling large data sets and models. Knowledge of developing models will be an added advantage.

PhD and MSc studies at UNIMA

Three full PhD and 10 full MSc fellowships (2 in each of 2021/22 up to 2025/26) are available for students from Malawi to be registered for study at UNIMA in the area of Water and Environment. The fellowship covers tuition, basic living and research expenses. The applicants for PhD should have an MSc degree and applicants for MSc should have BSc degree in areas such as hydrology, hydrogeology, climate and environmental sciences, with skills in handling large data sets and models. Knowledge of developing models will be an added advantage.

The applicants for UNIMA and UiO should send their dossiers containing certified certificates, transcripts and concept note electronically to the University Registrar, University of Malawi, ([email protected]) with a copy to Professor Cosmo Ngongondo ([email protected]).

The applicants for UDSM should send their dossiers containing certified certificates, transcripts and concept note electronically to the Director, Institute of Resource Assessment ([email protected]) and copy to Dr. Edmund Mabhuye ([email protected]).

The applicants for MZUNI should send their dossiers containing certified certificates, transcripts and concept note electronically to the University Registrar, Mzuzu University ([email protected]) with a copy to Professor Wales Singini ([email protected]).

The deadline for receiving applications is 5th November 2021. Only shortlisted applicants will be invited for interviews.
